Building the K-5m Strip Planked Sailboat "Pintail"



Construction Sequence Photos



Construction of K-5m hull number one, "Pintail", has started and I will be posting Construction Photos of the boat as it is being built. This boat is being built with the "build the hull last" philosophy. The goal is to pre-fabricate as much as possible before starting construction of the hull. The frames, bulkheads, stem, stern piece, and deck beams will be laminated and assembled, with all faying surface cut and beveled to fit the inside surface of the hull shell. The rudder, molds for the ballast keel, and deck hatches will all be complete before the hull is even started. Construction sequence for the hull and deck is:





Build the loft floor
Lay out body plan, stem, stern piece, and deck camber full size
Pre-Fabricate Deck Beams
Pre-Fabricate Half Frames
Pre-Fabricate Full Frames
Pre-Fabricate Bulkheads
Pre-Fabricate Stem and Stern Piece
Ballast Keel Molds
Rudder
Deck Hatches
Station Molds and Setup
Hull Planking, Sheathing, and Deadwood
Fair Hull
Install Half Frames
Install Deck Beams and Sheer Clamp
Install Deck Carlins and Seam Battens
Build Cockpit
Lay Plywood Deck
Deck and Cockpit FRP Sheathing
Fair Deck
Install Ballast Keel and Rudder
Build Companionway Hatch
Paint and Deck Non-Skid
